Become a SCBA Fee Arbitrator

The SCBA is seeking attorney arbitrators for its Fee Arbitration Program. Successful candidates must have five years’ experience as a licensed California attorney in good standing and have no pending professional disciplinary matters. The successful candidate must also submit an application form and complete an instructional course.

One such course is the free online Fee Arbitrator Training course offered by the State Bar of California. This course can be found in the e-learning portal of the attorney’s State Bar Profile. There the attorney will find a link to the e-learning portal that will take them to a personalized course dashboard. Lawyers can earn 2.0 hours of participatory Minimum Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) credit for completing this course (1.5 hours of general MCLE and 0.5 hours of ethics MCLE).

Serving as a Fee Arbitrator gives the attorney experience in serving in a quasi-judicial capacity. It also provides an unparalleled practical education on the requirements for a valid attorney-client fee agreement and legal/marginal/illegal billing practices.
